Summer 2011, Group 1 Blog: Week 1

Thursday 09/06 Arrive in Kampala

On the morning of the 9th June the volunteers arrived at Entebbe airport and were greeted by our excited team, after swapping money and enjoying icy cold drinks the journey continued to Jinja where the volunteers would partake in team building exercises including bungee jumping and white water rafting.

Following the short journey to Jinja those who dared partook in a bungee jump over the Nile. After a hard couple of days travelling and taking part in extreme sports the volunteers took refuge in a bar overlooking the Nile and were joined by gnarly adventurers and monkeys.

Friday 10/06 White water rafting and night out at Iguanas

We were awakened at 6.30am and bundled onto the bus, we were all half asleep but that was set to change… After eating fresh fruit, omelettes and pancakes for breakfast we found our helmets and life jackets and our adventure began. After our safety briefing and some practice flips we were ready to take on the rapids, which were all grade four and five (the highest levels one can do without expert training).

Saturday 11/06 BBQ

Today the volunteers were given the opportunity to stock up on the essentials (chocolate spread, sweets and marmite) that would not be available in Kanungu.

The evening was enjoyed round a BBQ with a cold beer or two. The night drew to a close early, as on the dawn of morning we would be starting our 10 hour journey to Kanungu.

Sunday 12/06 Journey to Kanungu

The volunteers were packed into the VU buses and their luggage slung on top ready for an 11 hour journey to Kanungu where the volunteers would be teaching for the next five weeks.

The road to Kanungu crosses through the equator line and here we watched as flowers spiralled down water in various directions.
